Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral to see a physical therapist at Embody?

+

Not usually. Minnesota is a direct access state, which means you can book an appointment with us directly—no referral needed if you're paying out of pocket.

If you have Medicare, a referral is required by Medicare guidelines.

If you're submitting for insurance reimbursement, it’s a good idea to check your plan—some do require a referral for out-of-network claims.

At Embody, we’re happy to help you navigate the details so you can get the care you need without unnecessary delays.

Do you take my insurance?

+

We’re considered an out-of-network provider, which means we don’t bill insurance directly—but many of our clients do use their insurance by submitting for reimbursement with a superbill. We’ll walk you through how to do that if you’d like.

(What’s a superbill? A statement which includes treatment codes and information for you to submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement.)

How is Embody different from a traditional PT clinic?

+

We don’t follow cookie-cutter protocols. Every session is one-on-one, tailored to your needs, and guided by principles that work. We blend physical therapy, movement, and functional wellness to support lasting change from the inside out.

What types of conditions do you treat?

+

We address everything from back, shoulder, and knee pain to injury prevention, post-op recovery, performance limitations, hormonal shifts, gut issues, and fatigue. Whether you’re injured, stuck, or feeling off—we help you uncover what’s holding you back.

How long should I wait after an injury to get treatment?

+

The short answer? Don’t wait.

The sooner we can assess and treat an injury, the easier it is to restore healthy movement and prevent compensation patterns from taking hold. Fascia and soft tissues adapt quickly to pain and dysfunction—so the longer they stay in a distorted or protective state, the more complex the healing process becomes. Early treatment helps:

  • Reduce inflammation and pain
  • Minimize strength loss
  • Prevent compensation patterns that can lead to future issues

  • That said, it’s never too late to start. We work with plenty of people who’ve been living with chronic pain for years—sometimes even decades—and meaningful progress is still possible. Whether your injury is new or longstanding, we’ll meet you where you are and help you move forward with clarity and care.

Will I have to stop working out or doing my sport while getting treatment?

    +

    Not always.

While complete rest is occasionally needed to allow for full healing, most of the time we’re able to keep you moving in some way throughout your care. We’ll help you modify where needed, so you can stay active without pushing through pain or slowing your recovery. Our goal isn’t just to get you out of pain—it’s to help you return to the activities you love, stronger and smarter than before. That means your sport or workout isn’t something we take away—it’s something we integrate into your treatment plan, with intention.

We’ll meet you where you are, make a plan together, and guide you toward sustainable progress that lasts beyond the clinic.

How many treatments will I need before I’m 100% again?

    +

This is one of the most common questions we hear—and understandably so. The truth is, it varies for each person and depends on several factors: how long you’ve had the issue, the severity of the injury, your age, overall health, and even your stress and sleep habits.

Some conditions—like ankle sprains or acute muscle strains—can respond quickly in just a few sessions. Others, such as herniated discs, frozen shoulder, or long-standing pain patterns, may take longer to fully resolve. And while notoriously stubborn issues like plantar fasciitis or tennis elbow can sometimes improve in just a few visits, they occasionally require more consistent treatment.

That said, most of our patients see noticeable improvement in just 2–4 sessions, and it’s rare that we need more than 5–7 sessions total. That’s a big shift from the standard 2–3x/week for 6–8 weeks you’ll often find at traditional PT clinics.

Why the difference? Because each session here is a full hour of one-on-one care. We combine hands-on manual therapy, movement, and a whole-person lens to get to the root of your issue—so we can help you move forward faster and with more lasting results. We’ll give you a clear, individualized plan at your first visit, so you’ll know what to expect based on your specific situation.

What should I expect at my first visit?

    +

You’ll get a full-body movement assessment, a deep dive into your health and goals, and a strategy session tailored to you. Wear comfortable clothes you can move in. If you're interested in pool therapy, your first visit will still be held in the clinic to establish your baseline.

What if I’m not sure whether I need PT, coaching, or both?

    +

No problem. We’ll help you figure that out in your intake session or a free consult call. We offer both stand-alone and integrated services depending on your needs.

    Do you offer virtual sessions?

    +

Yes. Many of our coaching and follow-up sessions can be done virtually. It’s a great option if you’re managing chronic conditions, live outside the area, or just need the convenience.
