The Growing Trend in Orthopedic Physical Therapy in 2025: Why You Deserve the Right to Choose

Large Medical Complex

The world of healthcare is constantly changing, and one of the most significant shifts we’re seeing in 2025 is in the way orthopedic physical therapy is being handled. Unfortunately, as the industry evolves, some practices are making it harder for patients to receive the care they truly need. At Embody Health and Performance, we believe your choice matters—both in how you approach your care and in the practitioners you trust.

In recent years, many large orthopedic centers have begun to make it more difficult for patients to seek physical therapy outside of their system. We’ve noticed an increasing trend where patients are encouraged—or even discouraged from seeking physical therapy care from practitioners of their choice. Instead, they’re being steered toward in-house physical therapy providers who are often financially tied to the larger corporate entity.

While these “big box” centers might argue that in-house therapy is more convenient, there’s a downside that doesn’t always get talked about: the choice is no longer yours.

At Embody Health and Performance, we’ve seen firsthand how this model can limit a patient’s ability to find the best possible care for their unique needs. But we want to make one thing clear: you deserve to have the final say in your healthcare journey.

One of our patients, let’s call her Helen, came to us after undergoing knee surgery. She had been seeing an orthopedic surgeon at a large, well-known orthopedic center, and when it came time for rehab, her surgeon told her that she had to complete her physical therapy in-house. The reason, according to the doctor, was so he could “keep an eye on her” throughout the process.

Helen, being a thoughtful and informed patient, didn’t feel comfortable with this, especially since she had a terrific rehab experience previously with Embody Health and Performance. She was worried that she wouldn’t be able to receive the personalized care she needed and that the options at this large center wouldn’t be a good fit for her recovery goals.

The good news? Helen didn’t have to feel trapped. She asked her doctor for a copy of her referral and brought it to us. We were able to step in and offer the one-on-one care and expertise that Helen needed, and most importantly, we kept her orthopedic surgeon updated on her progress every step of the way. Whether patients choose to do their therapy with us or somewhere else, we ensure that there’s constant communication between us and their primary care providers.

This collaboration—between us, the patient, and their doctor—is what leads to the best outcomes. The idea that patients are “stuck” in-house isn’t just limiting—it can also hinder their ability to fully recover.

It’s important to understand that when your doctor refers you for physical therapy, you have the right to choose where and with whom you want to receive care. Whether you’re being treated by an orthopedic specialist or another medical provider, it is entirely up to you to select the clinic or practitioner you feel most comfortable with.

Here at Embody Health and Performance, we believe in empowering you to make that decision. Whether you continue your care with us or decide to seek treatment elsewhere, we’re here to support you. Your health journey is yours, and we’re honored to be part of it.

If you’re unsure about how to go about seeking physical therapy outside of a large system, don’t worry! It’s actually a lot simpler than most people think. Here are a few ways to ensure you receive the care that’s right for you:

  • Request a hard copy of your referral: Ask your orthopedic provider for a physical copy of the referral to physical therapy.
  • Send it directly to your PT: You can take a picture of the referral and send it directly to your physical therapist via email.
  • Have your orthopedic office fax it over: If you’re more comfortable, ask your orthopedic office to fax your referral directly to your physical therapist’s office of choice.

These options are all perfectly legal, and you have the power to choose where you receive your care. At the end of the day, your well-being and comfort are the most important things.

At Embody Health and Performance, we don’t see you as just another patient—we see you as our patient for life. Whether you choose to come to us for treatment or go somewhere else, we are committed to your lifelong health journey. We’ll always be here to guide you, provide advice, and support your recovery in any way we can.

We genuinely care about the people who come through our doors, and that care doesn’t end when your treatment session does. You’re part of the Embody family, and we’re with you every step of the way.

In 2025, as orthopedic physical therapy trends continue to evolve, we urge you to stay informed and empowered. Remember, your choice of care matters, and you have the right to choose the best therapist, the best clinic, and the best path forward for your recovery. Whether you’re with us at Embody or another trusted provider, we’ll always stand by your side.
